Plot

Elena does everything for her daughter, Maria Eduarda, to accept her alcoholic father, Orestes. But Eduarda has eyes only for her great love, Marcelo. The boy suffers from a persecution of his former girlfriend, Laura, distraught at having been neglected. Marcelo's mother, Blanca Leticia, also disagreed with the choice of her son. Blanca is a fierce and strong-willed woman, who likes to manipulate other people. Blanca has been worshipped by Marcelo, but despises the other two, modern Milena and quiet Leonardo. Blanca controls the life of her friend Izabel, who has an affair with Atilio, a man who is looking for a great love. Blanca has long been in love with Atilio and angry to learn that he fell in love with Eduarda's mother, Elena.

After a brief romance, and to the disgust of Blanca, Izabel and Laura, Elena marries Atilio and Eduarda marries Marcelo. Mother and daughter get pregnant at the time and give birth the same day in the hospital under the care of young doctor Cesar, an eternal love of Eduarda. Elena's son is born healthy, but Eduarda have complications during childbirth and the baby is stillborn. To complicate the situation of the girl, she can never be a mother due to the loss of her uterus. Desperate to avoid this blow to her daughter, Elena decides to change the babies and implores the help of Caesar. Although reluctant to the idea, Caesar finally relents and agrees to the exchange, which will be a source of blame throughout the novel. Cesar is the only person who knows this secret, with the same goal as Elena: to avoid pain for Eduarda. Who else suffers, however, is Elena, who is obliged to treat the child as a grandchild and still sees her relationship with Atilio collapse, despite the great love that unites them. She writes all the events in a diary and that's where the great secret is revealed to Eduarda.
